Cox's Bazar has been one of the world's most-visited beaches for decades — but for too long the value of that tourism flowed out, not in. Cox's Bazar Surf Hub flips that. Every coach, lifeguard, guide, cook and admin is from this coast. Our apparel is made in Bangladesh. Our boards are shaped here. Section 03 · Made On This Coast

We stopped importing and started making. আমরা আমদানি বন্ধ করে নিজেরা বানাতে শুরু করেছি।

The reason so few Bangladeshis surf has never been talent or interest. It has been arithmetic. A board that sells for one price abroad lands here at two or three times that once freight, duty and clearing are paid — which quietly decides who in this country is allowed into the water at all. So we started making the gear ourselves: the boards, the fins, and the wax. Three stories, three workshops, all of them on this coast. বাংলাদেশে খুব কম মানুষ সার্ফ করে — কারণটা প্রতিভা বা আগ্রহ নয়, হিসাব। বিদেশে যে বোর্ডের এক দাম, মালবহন ও শুল্কের পর এখানে তার দাম দুই-তিন গুণ। তাই আমরা নিজেরাই বানাতে শুরু করেছি — বোর্ড, ফিন এবং মোম।

Story 01 · Surfboard Shaping সার্ফবোর্ড শেপিং

The blank, the block, and the board. ব্ল্যাঙ্ক, ব্লক আর বোর্ড।

Every surfboard that ever reached Cox's Bazar came off a container. When one snapped, it stayed snapped — a broken board meant a season without a board, because the replacement was months and a customs queue away. That is not a sport. That is a waiting list. কক্সবাজারে আসা প্রতিটি সার্ফবোর্ড এসেছে কন্টেইনারে। একটা ভাঙলে সেটা ভাঙাই থেকে যেত — কারণ বদলি বোর্ড আসতে লাগত মাসের পর মাস।

So Fahad's team learned to shape. Foam blanks come up from Narayanganj, and everything after that happens here: template, cut, plane, glass, sand, finish. The first boards were heavy and honest. The first board we shaped was ugly, and it floated. That was enough to keep going.

Story 02 · Fins ফিন

Small, expensive, and always the thing that breaks. ছোট, দামি, আর সবসময় এটাই ভাঙে।

A fin is a piece of plastic the size of your hand. It is also the part that hits the sandbar first, and the part nobody stocks. Losing one used to take a board out of rotation for a month while a replacement crossed an ocean to reach a beach that already had the sand, the swell and the surfer waiting. ফিন হাতের সমান একটা প্লাস্টিকের টুকরো। কিন্তু বালুচরে প্রথম ধাক্কাটা এটাই খায়, আর কেউ এটা মজুদ রাখে না।

We took a set to a local injection moulder, had a tool cut, and now they come out by the tray. Glass-filled nylon, standard box pattern so they fit the boards we shape and the boards we already own. Story 03 · Surf Wax সার্ফ ওয়াক্স

Wax that survives the Bay of Bengal. বঙ্গোপসাগরে টিকে থাকা মোম।

Here is a problem almost nobody outside the water would think of. Surf wax is formulated to a water temperature. The Bay of Bengal sits around 28 to 30 degrees for most of the year — and nearly all the wax that reaches this market is cool-water or cold-water formula, because that is what the world makes most of. In our water it turns to grease inside twenty minutes and slides off the deck, taking the surfer with it. সার্ফ ওয়াক্স পানির তাপমাত্রা অনুযায়ী তৈরি হয়। বঙ্গোপসাগর বছরের বেশিরভাগ সময় ২৮–৩০ ডিগ্রি — অথচ এখানে যে মোম আসে তা ঠান্ডা পানির ফর্মুলা। আমাদের পানিতে তা বিশ মিনিটেই গলে যায়।

Tropical formula is harder and melts higher, and nobody imports it here because the volume is too small to be worth the freight. So we make it. A paraffin base, beeswax from Bangladeshi apiaries for grip and hardness, a little coconut oil to keep it workable. A hard basecoat that stays put and a tropical topcoat over it. ট্রপিক্যাল ফর্মুলা শক্ত এবং বেশি তাপে গলে। কেউ এটা আমদানি করে না — পরিমাণ কম, মালবহন পোষায় না। তাই আমরা বানাই। প্যারাফিন বেস, বাংলাদেশি মৌচাকের মোম, সামান্য নারকেল তেল।

Fahad and Jahed went to Bali, and came back with a method. ফাহাদ আর জাহেদ বালি গিয়েছিল, আর একটা পদ্ধতি নিয়ে ফিরেছে।

Bali has what Cox's Bazar is building, except it has had thirty years to get there — shaping bays, wax makers, surf schools moving hundreds of beginners a week, and a beach-safety culture that grew up alongside all of it. We could have guessed at how that works from videos. Sha was trained by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution in Bangladesh, then completed advanced ocean-safety training at RNLI College in Poole, UK. On return he led the launch of Bangladesh's first dedicated beach lifeguard service in Cox's Bazar — and still works the beach himself. RNLI-এর কাছে প্রশিক্ষিত হয়ে কক্সবাজারে বাংলাদেশের প্রথম নিবেদিত বিচ লাইফগার্ড পরিষেবা চালু করেছেন। এখনও সরাসরি বিচে কাজ করেন।

His previous career was developing 100+ fitness professionals across all roles at Crunch Fitness USA — including full general managers. We are not going to tell you that one amount buys a board and another buys a breakfast. That is a sales technique, and it puts a price on a child.
